What Is Blepharoplasty?
To put it simply, blepharoplasty is eyelid surgery. This cosmetic type of surgery is used to improve droopy eyelids and does this by removing excess skin from around the eye area. The procedure is performed by a surgeon making a cut along your eyelid crease and removing any excess skin or fat from the area. The cut will then be stitched back up and the scar will blend in with the natural crease of your eyelid. It can be done on the upper or lower eyelids. The only additional step is with the lower eyelids, the surgeon will remove fat from the bags under the eyes, and if necessary they will also support the muscles of the eyelid. After surgery, your surgeon will apply thin sticky strips to help support the area, but these are usually removed within a week.
How Long Does A Blepharoplasty Last?
If you mean the actual blepharoplasty treatment itself, it depends on if you're having the upper or the lower lid treated. Generally, surgeons say upper lids take about one hour and lower lids can take up to two hours. Now, if your question was how long do the results of the blepharoplasty treatment last, it's been noted that they can last anywhere between five and seven years! After you've had your treatment, it can take up to six weeks before you see the full benefit and the best results though. There may still be very minor swelling, but overall your eyes will look refreshed and so will you!
Benefits Of Blepharoplasty
Once you've had your treatment done we want you to feel great, and blepharoplasty has some great benefits, so we thought we'd tell you about a couple of them! As you know, the aim of the procedure is to reduce the skin around your eyelids to stop you from having baggy or droopy eyelids, so that's the first advantage of this treatment! As the dark circles from under your eyes will be gone, you will notice that lines and wrinkles have also reduced in appearance, leaving your skin looking refreshed and youthful! It's also been suggested that blepharoplasty can help people who suffer from migraines, as it touches on some of the nerves that can improve the feelings and symptoms of migraines.
Side Effects Of Blepharoplasty
Most surgeries or treatments do carry the risk of side effects but do not let that put you off, as the benefits do outweigh the side effects here. The side effects of blepharoplasty are usually mild and don't last too long. However, there is a recovery period and there are a few things you need to be aware of. After the surgery, it's recommended that you take at least a week off from work, and you will not be able to drive for a number of days after you've had the surgery. It's normal to experience bruising and redness around your eye area, and your doctor will advise you on how to treat this either with drops or ointment to clean the area. It's recommended that you wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the elements. Additionally, you should try to avoid swimming for at least a few days, smoking as it could affect your eyes and interfere with your recovery, and avoid wearing contact lenses or rubbing your eyes until the area has fully healed, which could take up to 6 weeks.
